Melting Pot.....

Family, our beautiful, wonderful, melting pot of a family. Blending two backgrounds can be as easy as 1, 2, 3 or there can be many challenges. One of the hurdles to overcome when two people from different races decide to get married is family acceptance, or actually lack thereof. There is the old school generation that just doesn't believe in interracial marriage, and there is the new school generation that thinks it's selling out. Unfortunately we had to deal with both. However, instead of dwelling on what other people thought about us we just moved forward and lived our lives in love. If they wanted to take the ride with us, fantastic, come along, but if not, we had to keep on "riding!" As our love and commitment grew so did the acceptance from everyone else. When people see that you are truly with someone because of the love you have for that person and not for the color of their skin, or anything else for that matter, all of the other "stuff" just seems to float away. I feel so blessed to be in a family that is so diverse. We are all unique and we continue to learn from each other every single day. I am happy to say that today we are an amazing group of very different people that all love each other very much. It didn't happen overnight and it wasn't always easy, but with a lot of work and understanding, we did it! So here's to family....our differences, our similarities, and our love for each other!

We have the best family in the world - and by that I mean the entire extended family on all sides. We are truly blessed! Love you Sis.

Wow Amy,

I stumbled on your blog purely by accident. It is absolutely wonderful. I am white/native american and my husband in black. We live in a small town outside of Dallas, Texas. We've been married 10 years now and have 5 children (mine, yours and ours :) Its so nice to read that someone else in the world is going through some of the same things you are, like "Oh, we don't think of you as white", or someone asking "what" my son is. To which my common reply is "a little boy". I will be following your blog and keep it up !!! And I loved the Driving Miss Daisy story. I laughed and laughed!

Sincerely,

Teri,

I am so happy you found my blog! I absolutely love hearing stories from other people in interracial marriages. It is such a special bond we all have even if we have never met. I am so glad you can relate and so happy you are enjoying my family stories. I am sure they are your stories as well! Loving the laughter from Driving Miss Daisy! =) My husband is a bit of a comedian! I will be posting a few times a week and would love to hear more from you! May I ask how you found my blog? Thanks again for reading and I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend and fabulous Summer!

Hi Amy,

I actually found you when I googled interracial marriage. Unfortunately, Texas is still far behind the rest of the world in coming to grips with the fact that two people can actually meet and fall in love and not have to be the same color. It never ceases to amaze me how some people can be so mean. I still have black women approach me and cuss me up and down for taking "one of their men". Funny how after people get to know Fredie and I, their common response is "we just forget that you are a mixed couple". My response is "why don't you see everyone that way?" I agree with the others on your blog. You should really pursue writing in a magazine or some other publication. There are so many of "us" :) out there, but so spread apart, the support and understanding is wonderful.

Amy,

I meant to leave you my email so that we could possibly keep in touch outside of this forum. Take care and looking forward to the next "story".

Teri,

Thanks for letting me know how you found the site. I am so glad it is finally showing up on google. =)

I think I would fall over if someone stopped me and cussed me up and down for being with my husband! Wow! That is just ignorance rearing its ugly head. My hope for this blog is that maybe someone will read it that thinks that way and they will see that we are all truly alike in how we live, what we want, and what are dreams for the future are. Baby steps, one person at a time. =) I would love to keep in touch...thank you for the email address. I will email you tonight. Keep your head up, and just let everyone see that you are in this for love and for the long haul! Hugs sent to Texas!
